Prairie Pinwheels was designed as an introduction to a new series of patterns designed around windmills. Perhaps the most “efficient” design when it comes to fabric usage, this quilt requires less than 15 yards of fabric, INCLUDING the backing! This efficiency is due to the use of extremely well thought out cutting templates for the circular pinwheel, and no cutting at all for the spiked pinwheels. The spiked pinwheels are done using 2-1/2″ strips, which are strip pieced, then cut after the sewing is completed, to the perfect size. All other pieces are background triangles and rectangles, that are cut to exact size!

Class includes personalized pattern created especially for you from your photograph. (Please send photo by: July 18th, see supply list below) Learn to capture your best friend’s joy of life forever in fabric. Day one: Begin with a concentration on fabric selection, dimension, perspective, light, shading, appliqué and color placement. Day two: Add dimension and realism with thread painting and bring your quilt to life! (Machine Required for 2nd day only) In this two session class Debbie will share her technique of fusible applique and thread painting. Learn the basics of thread painting in free motion including satin applique stitching! After discussion of threads and needle choices Debbie will demonstrate thread painting techniques and how it’s application can enhance your quilts and bring it to life. Then it is time to get out your threads and color like you’re a kid again with a new box of crayons and color, color, color! Supply List Sewing Machine capable of free motion ( for second class only) Top stitching 90/4 or 80/12 needles Mini Iron Light box sharp scissors for applique cutting Masking tape water soluble thread Thread (for second class), this project takes several spools of thread, I prefer Poly threads. Poly threads provide a "shine to the coat" and less lint builds up in the bobbin case. But I have also been known to use whatever is needed for the project . Optional - Mini foldaway (travel cutting and pressing board) Fabric We will be going over fabric selection in class so don't obsess too badly over fabric choice, and I will help you select fabric in the shop. But this project can take several fabrics so look through your stash. Look at your photo carefully and select "several" fabrics in different shades and tones based on your friends colors. Tone on tone and several different shades of the same color, but nothing too busy or with too much contrast unless it can be fussy cut. For the top of your quilt you need approx. 1/2 yard. Lay your picture on the fabric to audition; I refer to select fabric that compliments the picture. Batting: I prefer Thermor light batting. Thermor helps prevent the fabric from shifting - it's much easier for the needle to go through and creates less lint.
