"Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics" is the landmark nine-part documentary series that offers a fresh, relevant exploration of quilts. This fascinating series explores quilts in fresh new ways by taking you behind the scenes to reveal the unique position of quilts at the center of American culture. You'll go on an amazing quilt journey from function to art, to women's empowerment, economic clout, American politics and beyond. There are 9 episodes that will be shared. Each month will bring a new topic. Episode 1: Quilts 101 – Antique and Contemporary Quilts Introduction What Is a Quilt? What Makes One Quilt Better than Another? Ways to Develop Your ‘Eye’ What is a quilt? This episode introduces the audience to the brave new world of the American quilt, where that question has many different answers. If a ‘real’ quilt is a three-layer fabric sandwich sewn together and folded over a bed, how do we define the quilt that is an amalgamation of fabric, photography, print making and other media, and hangs on a gallery wall? Our experts contribute varying perspectives, setting the stage for the complexity of the series’ larger topic: Why quilts matter and how they relate to history, art and politics. This episode also takes a look at judgments of quality in the quilt world. Learn what makes one antique quilt more valuable and important than another, and why contemporary quilts are judged by a very different set of standards. To close the episode, experts provide practical suggestions for quilt fans who want to develop their ‘eye’ for a great quilt. In short, it’s Quilts 101, and the perfect introduction to a surprisingly complex subject.

A special release in 2015 of (48) pre-cut and pre-sorted Bali Pops selected by Quiltworx.com, was the inspiration behind the Prismatic Star design. The strip piecing process for the Prismatic Star was designed for foundation paper piecing. Strips are sewn onto foundation paper to complete what we call a ‘Strip Set’. After the strip sets are completed they are cut apart, rearranged and resewn into a diamond star point. The process originated by combining two previous published techniques used in several of the Lone Star inspired and Bali Fever quilt designs by Quiltworx.com. The foundation papers, layouts, and strip piecing process were designed by Brad and Judy Niemeyer for foundation paper piecing.
