Scrap Club - Jun 13, 2013

So what is scrap club you ask? Are there any rules? How do you define a scrap? Do I have to buy any special tools to join? Do I have to come to every class? Do I have to make every quilt? Scrap club was formally known as stash pot pie when it was started a year ago, every month we made a new quilt that was approx. size of a lap , or twin, the group found that is was very difficult to keep up with making a quilt every month, so this new format was decided on, The plan is that every month the scrappers will get together on the 2nd Thursday of the month and work on a quilt, every 2 months a new quilt will be presented, at any given class the scrappers may or may not be working on the same quilt, I will help custom size each quilt presented from table runner to king ,hopefully you will pick the size project that works for you.The idea is for this to be a fun way to get together, share ideas, share fabric and sew, we do not want any one to feel pressured to complete every quilt presented, you will be encouraged to Share your knowledge, Ideas, stories, and trade your scraps. I am available to help you make the most beautiful scrap quilts you can, What is a scrap : a scrap is comprised of any fabric you own, that fabric can be any size, it can be newely bought, traded or have had for longer than you can remember, A scrap is generally any fabric left over from a different project, fabric bought for a project you decided not to make, or any fabric you purchased because it was beautiful and you just had to have it. Basically a scrap is any fabric you have not used yet in another project What makes a scrap quilt different from other quilts, it is the number of fabrics you use, the fabrics can include, big prints and little prints, bright ones and dull ones, plaids, and batiks .Any thing goes. Solids can be a bit of a challenge to mix with prints but a variety of solids used together can be very beautiful. The magic of scrap quilts besides the number of fabrics used, is the color of fabrics, again anything goes. You will find the prettiest scrap quilts will have a simple pattern made up of a good contrast between dark and light. In the scrap club I will help you to feel more comfortable with using a variety of fabrics together, and help you to understand the concept of value which is key to making your scrap quilts sparkle. Tools: you will need your basic straight ruler and rotary cutter, I have found that the companion angle and easy angle rulers are great for using precut strips of fabric and turning them into triangles and ½ and 1/4 square triangles. They are not mandatory I will show you alternative ways to cut each block we use. I strongly recommend using spray starch to press your fabric BEFORE cutting, I prefer heavy starch not sizing. There is a pressing bar that I also recommend for pressing your seams without stretching or distorting your blocks available for again this is not mandatory just a recommendation. I do not use steam to press as I find it causes excess distortion. I recommend that whenever you have time I recommend you begin cutting your scraps into the following sizes that will be used in most of the quilts we will be making, 1 ½ , 2 , 2 ½ 3 , 3 ½ , 4,5 and 6 inches. Cut strips the length of the fabric, sort your fabric into light, medium and darks. cut strips shorter than 6 inches into squares Sign up for 5 and get the 6th free! You must pay for 5 at one time to get the 6th free.

Scrap Club - Aug 08, 2013
